Galilee Centre is a children's learning centre that welcomes children and youths between the ages of 2½ and 14 years from low-income families in the neighbourhood.
The centre provides educational support for children from the AMK Avenue 4 neighbourhood: many come from single parent households, and are experiencing the trauma of being separated from a parent, a few from families that are malfunctioning due to drug and substance abuse or have mental disability and/or are victims of violence. These families, for various reasons, are unable to adequately provide for their children with the nurturing and necessary skills to cope with life. Galilee Centre is a safe haven for these children.
Galilee Centre serves about 40 children in the Ang Mo Kio area. It offers a Headstart Programme for young children to prepare them with basic learning skills and the discipline needed for them to enter formal primary education. The parents of these children are unable to provide the stimulation and nurturance for their children either because they are poorly educated, illiterate or are plagued with social, financial and emotional difficulties. Currently, we have children doing the various programmes that cater to their age suitability.
The Centre also provides an Alternative Learning Programme for school-going children (7 years and above) who find the formal school setting a daily struggle. The individualised support each child receives helps each one to progress at his/her own pace. Among these children are a few children and youths who have never been to school because of their unique family situation.
Night Tuition is also another service provided by the Centre for secondary school students who need guidance and help in their schoolwork.
Galilee Centre strives to broaden the children’s experiences through visits to places of learning and interests which would have otherwise been beyond their reach. The Centre also creates opportunities for the children to develop their self-esteem, such as the Journey with a Dream Camp, performances at the IJ Arts Fest and Christmas caroling with the Via Christus Choir. Eventually, each child will be empowered with the confidence and knowledge that he has an integral role to play in society. The children at the centre are assured that when they graduate, they have the right values and attitude that will accompany them throughout their adult lives.
